BBR NC SUPER 180

(2.0-litre NC models only) +24bhp & 18lb.ft

Previously Super 175 – Updated October 2016

BBR’s new budget normally aspirated tuning package for 2005 onwards Mazda MX-5.

  • Offers extremely affordable, exciting and user-friendly performance upgrade
  • Gains an excellent 24 bhp & 18 lb.ft of torque, with increases throughout entire rev range

Following BBR’s highly successful MX5 ‘Super 180’ upgrade BBR is pleased to announce an exciting engine tuning package for 2005 onwards MX-5 Mk3 / 3.5 models. Designed to meet the demand for a budget engine upgrade that delivers extra response, power, driveability and excitement.

The BBR’s DIY ‘Super 180’ upgrade for the 2.0i Mazda Mk3 / MK3.5 MX-5 consists of the following components:-

  • BBR stainless steel 4 into 1 exhaust manifold
  • BBR StarChip ECU remap and ProEcu hardware/software bundle

Whilst developing our MX5 ‘Super 180’ package it instantly became clear that changes to the standard manifold back exhaust system made no appreciable gain in power with the standard manifold in place. The standard MX5 manifold is by far the most restrictive part and most detrimental to power in the entire standard exhaust system. It is only when the standard manifold is changed that further power gains can be achieved by replacing the standard manifold back system.

Specifically developed for clients seeking a budget MX5 conversion, the BBR ‘Super 180’ upgrade can easily later be upgraded to our full ‘Super 185‘ package. Back to back dyno testing with the standard 158bhp 2.0i Mazda MX-5 shows that the BBR ‘Super 180’ gains a considerable 24bhp, taking peak power to a maximum of 182.6bhp at 7100 rpm. BBR has placed great emphasis on extracting more torque from the MX-5’s 16-valve powerplant to ensure that driveability and throttle response are superior to the standard car. The ‘Super 180’ equipped 2.0i MX-5 produces an impressive 24 Nm (18 lb.ft) more than the original, with peak torque of 159.6lb.ft arriving at just 4250rpm, some 750rpm lower than the stock car just like our full ‘Super 185‘ conversion!

Had a BBR Super180 kit fitted to my 2011 MX5 2 ltr Sport Tech in October 2017. Result is a wholly different driving experience, with power rising all the way through the rev range and no appreciable lag anywhere, until the rev limiter cuts in. In practical terms, not only is it much quicker through the gears, the car accelerates smoothly from much lower down the rev range and keeps on accelerating. It is now a more dynamic package overall and provides enough power to accelerate out of bends, letting the limited slip diff earn its keep. The reworked exhaust Manifold and Exhaust System allow the engine to breath properly and the BBR Starchip ECU remap, make the most of the newly released power. As the car was already fitted with a K&N flat panel, output rose to 186.1 bhp, with max torque 161.4 ft-lbs. Impressive!
The installation service by BBR was excellent, being both friendly and efficient and the quality of the product extremely solid.
Thoroughly recommend the Super 180 or Super 185, as a non-invasive naturally-aspirated upgrade that gives the MX5 some teeth. (Have also fitted IL roll-bars and EBC Turbo Discs).

186.1hp John? Which dyno was this that is accurate to 0.05% ?

    • BBR GTi

Hi Geoff, many thanks for your message. You’ve lost us a little with your comment, however, our 180 conversion exceeds 180bhp 99% of the time. Kind regards

Hi Geoff. Don’t know anything about dyno performance, just reading off the print out. The Super 180 kit was augmented with a BBR Touring backbox, which along with the K&N air intake panel probably got close to a BBR Super 185 specification, hence the 186.1 bhp read-out. Whatever, the car keeps adding smiles every time I take it out.
